INTRODUCTION

You may well recognise the artwork style of John Dyer from the Island Sailing annual Christmas card! As a high-regarded painter on the Cornish art scene, for over 25 years John Dyer’s vibrant flair has captured the colours of the world through the stroke of a brush. Here at Island Sailing, we’re big fans of John’s beautiful paintings of sailing boats, and how he captures the essence and feeling of being out on the water.

We recently caught up with John to find out more about his love of sailing and how it influences his artwork.

How has sailing influenced your work? Have you done much sailing yourself?

I love sailing, the sheer joy of being on the water with the effortless natural power of the breeze taking me across the ocean with the play of light on the surface, the sound of the waves and the beauty of the surrounding environment. I used to sail as a boy regularly and owned a Topper sailing dingy ‘Puffin’; she gave me true freedom, respect for the sea and an appreciation of the power of nature. My father also owned a Westerly Griffon yacht, ‘Willow of Mylor’, and we would spend time together sailing off the south coast of Cornwall, photographing, painting and camping in her and swimming to secluded bays and beaches. This sailing experience has undoubtedly influenced my work, as I know the feel of being on the ocean and the feel of the breeze filling the sails. I can describe a yacht in just a few brush strokes, capturing the essence of billowing sails and sparkling water. I now paint from the shore and revisit those secluded coves and beaches I sailed to as a boy to capture the yachts out on the ocean and the fun of a family day on the shore.

We particularly love your artwork from the “Tall Ships” project! What did you enjoy the most about painting these?

My work is very autobiographical and has a narrative and celebratory nature. It celebrates Tall Ships are amazing! I have been the artist in residence for three Sail Training International tall ships regattas so far, and I will paint them again as they return to Falmouth in Cornwall this summer. I love the sense of carnival, the colours of the flags they display, and the sailors in their uniforms standing in lines on the square-rigged sails as they come into the harbour. Tall ships bring the world with them, with Mexican, British and European boats all coming together in one spectacular parade of sail. It’s a feast for the eyes and an excellent subject for a painting, as there are many stunning visual elements and stories to tell. I have very fond memories of sailing along the Thames in London in the ‘Iris’ tall ship for the official launch of the Royal Borough of Greenwich tall ships regatta using my iPad to make drawings of the tall ship quickly, the views across the deck to the London skyline and the river Thames which were all tweeted out live for the press.

We see you have travelled quite a lot during your career as an artist! As Italy is one of our charter destinations, can you give us an insight into your time there?

Italy is a spectacular country, I have created many paintings on location there, from the vineyards and olive groves in Umbria and Tuscany, the ancient towns like San Gimignano surrounded by succulent produce to the beaches near Pisa, the stunning Adriatic coast at Termoli and an extensive period painting during three years on the Italian Riviera in Liguria where I was the artist in residence at the Giardini Hanbury whilst living with my family in Menton, France on the Côte d’Azur.

I have many fond memories of my daughter Martha-Lilly sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking along the coast of Liguria and the Côte d’Azur, in Cannes and Monaco, and I love to get out on a paddleboard each summer when I can to enjoy the tranquillity and joy of the ocean off the Italian coast, diving into the sea and snorkelling with Mediterranean fish. Last summer we spent three weeks in Italy and France on the coast swimming, paddleboarding and painting.

Can you tell us a bit about the “Last Chance to Paint” project? Island Sailing are passionate about marine conservation and love that this art project raises awareness about climate change.

I founded Last Chance to Paint in 2018 to celebrate my 50th birthday, and the award-winning Falmouth Art Gallery in Cornwall held a major public retrospective of my art ‘Painting the Colours of the World – John Dyer at 50, a Retrospective’ and commissioned a book with a foreword by Alan Titchmarsh MBE to celebrate my life and work. It struck me that the same information I had been taught at school about climate change (the greenhouse effect back in the 1980s) was still being taught, but that nothing had been done to stop the damage. I have made changes in my life to reduce my footprint on the planet and its ecosystems and have travelled in conjunction with the Eden Project to highlight endangered ecosystems. Still, I suddenly realised I was influential as so many schools around the UK and the world study me as an artist and use my paintings to inspire children to paint. When primary school children reach the age of 50, the world could be unrecognisable in so many ways if we all don’t take personal responsibility and try to limit the damage we are doing. It’s far too late to protest; it’s too late to wait for governments to act, it’s time to act, and I felt that by inviting schools to ‘travel’ with me, to learn with me, to meet tribal people with me, to get involved and to ask questions we might be able to influence the younger generation not just to protest but actually to do something about it themselves, to take personal responsibility.

If you could choose any of our yacht charter destinations to visit, which would you pick? Would you be packing your paint brushes?

Your yacht charter destinations are all beautiful locations to paint and spend time in, but I would love an opportunity to paint, explore and sail in the British Virgin Islands. I have painted on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, but to be out on the ocean, exploring the islands and the wildlife, would be incredible. The colours, light, narrative and environmental story to be told there would be perfect for my paintings, so yes, I would be packing my paint brushes and designing a Last Chance To Paint educational adventure around the experience for schools worldwide.

Finally, where can people purchase your artwork?

In 2005 I moved away from the physical gallery I founded in Cornwall in 1989, and shortly afterwards, JohnDyerGallery.com was founded. JohnDyerGallery.com has been built on the latest technology and offers a global audience easy access to view and buy with no delivery charges, not only my work but also my father’s work Ted Dyer and the work of my wife and fellow artist Joanne Short. We are proud that we have grown the gallery to one of the best online galleries in the UK and haven’t just tried to replicate a physical gallery but are using the technology to make available a range of paintings, prints and artist-designed gifts that could never be physically represented due to the sheer number of unique images and options.

We use cutting-edge technology to print and ship orders locally to the buyer, so if you order an open-edition print or art poster print, art mug, art t-shirt or art iPhone case in the USA, we make it in the USA for you and ship locally. This applies to the USA, UK, EU and Australia. It’s super fast and efficient, removes wasted stock and minimises our carbon footprint massively. We have thousands of delighted clients in the UK and a growing number in the south of the USA in California and Florida who can all enjoy my contemporary art from various price points, from museum-quality art poster prints to large original paintings.

Art can make the perfect gift, improve mental health and well-being, and last a lifetime. Deciding what to purchase for a loved one can sometimes be tricky, so we also offer digital gift cards as they are a superb choice and allow the recipient to select exactly what artwork inspires them and works with their interior decor.
